A smaller hole therefore does not automatically mean “more resistance,” and a larger hole does not automatically mean “less resistance” when other geometric parameters change at the same time.
Small design differences can influence flow behavior. Whether a particular difference is relevant in a specific setup cannot, however, be determined from a single measurement alone.
Is an even hole distribution automatically better?
No. An even hole distribution is one possible design approach, but it is not the only valid one.

Hole geometry and channeling
Channeling does not result from a single factor. Basket geometry can influence the hydraulic boundary conditions, while grind size, dose, distribution, clumping, puck height, tamping, water distribution and extraction profile also play a role.
A particular hole pattern therefore does not automatically prevent channeling. Conversely, an unusual or visually less uniform hole pattern is not automatically problematic.

Why tamper fit still matters
Regardless of hole geometry, the tamper should cover as much of the usable basket area as practical without binding against the basket wall.
For many modern precision baskets in the 58 mm class, a tamper around 58.4 to 58.45 mm can provide a good fit. This is not a universal target size. The actual internal dimensions and geometry of the specific basket remain decisive.

How to compare espresso baskets meaningfully
When comparing two baskets, looking only at the visible hole count is not enough. A controlled comparison with otherwise similar conditions is more useful.
- use the same coffee and, where possible, the same dose
- use a defined brew ratio
- keep puck preparation repeatable
- dial in grind size for each basket if the flow requires it
- document shot time and beverage yield
- compare the sensory result
This makes it possible to judge whether the geometry of a basket offers a practical advantage in the individual setup.
