HOW IT WORKS

Puck Preparation with Vibration

Consistent puck preparation is an important basis for reproducible espresso extractions. The aim is to distribute the coffee grounds as evenly as possible in the filter basket, create a level surface and compact the puck consistently.

  • Homogeneity: The coffee grounds are distributed as evenly as possible throughout the basket.
  • Level surface: The puck surface is level and as parallel as possible to the top edge of the portafilter.
  • Reproducibility: The workflow can be repeated as consistently as possible from shot to shot.

Depending on the grinder, coffee and individual workflow, different methods can be used for distribution and compaction, including WDT, a leveler or conventional tamping. Reaching a particular high tamping force is not the objective. What matters is stable, level and reproducible compaction.

Irregularities often become visible only during extraction, for example as uneven flow or channeling. A simple and consistent workflow can therefore help make puck preparation more reproducible. This is where the Hauck Vibra comes in.

Introducing: Hauck Vibra

The Hauck Vibra combines conventional tamping with targeted vibration in one compact tool.

While the tamper base compacts the puck, vibration supports the rearrangement and a more even distribution of the coffee particles. This can support a simple, low-effort and reproducible workflow. Depending on the coffee, grinder and existing preparation routine, the Vibra can simplify or reduce additional distribution steps; however, WDT, levelers or other methods are not automatically unnecessary in every setup.

The horizontal handle and precise guidance of the base are designed for ergonomic, level use. The objective is not to apply the highest possible tamping force, but to create a consistent puck structure with as little shot-to-shot variation as possible.

Design

The design of the Hauck Vibra combines a clean form with practical functionality. Stainless steel and selected handle materials are intended for durable, precise use in everyday barista workflows.

The horizontal handle houses the vibration unit and USB-C rechargeable battery while supporting ergonomic guidance during preparation. Depending on the model, different handle materials are available, including Skater, oak and olive.

The vertical axis is positioned slightly off-center on the handle. The stainless-steel button starts the Vibra and is also used to select the available operating modes and operating time.

The X-Base serves as both a design element and the vertical guide for the tamper base beneath it. Its precision bearing supports stable guidance and targeted transmission of vibration into the puck. A purpose-designed rubber ring decouples the X-Base, base and portafilter from one another. Because the X-Base has no fixed stop point, larger immersion depths are also possible.

At approximately 100 × 70 × 100 mm, the Hauck Vibra is comparable in size to a conventional tamper. The base is replaceable and available in different diameters.

Vibration & Puck Structure

Vibration is used in many technical applications to rearrange granular materials or influence their packing density. Applied to ground coffee, this does not mean that vibration automatically creates more tamping pressure. Instead, the particles can move relative to one another more easily and rearrange during vibration.

With the Hauck Vibra, vibration acts while the puck is guided vertically. The base provides the compaction, while vibration supports a more even particle arrangement. Frequency, amplitude and application time influence this process. The aim is a puck structure that is as homogeneous and reproducible as possible. This can help reduce inhomogeneities and shot-to-shot variation, but it does not replace correct grinder settings, dose and extraction parameters and cannot completely rule out channeling in every setup.

Sustainability

In the design of the Hauck Vibra, we place particular emphasis on durability and repairability. Its modular construction allows individual components to be inspected, serviced or replaced when required.

Development and manufacturing are closely connected to our own workshop and selected regional partners. Short coordination routes and repairable components are part of our approach to using resources responsibly. The Vibra is supplied in a sturdy wooden box that protects the product during transport and storage.

Quality

Hauck Barista Tools has been developing professional barista tools for more than ten years. Each Hauck Vibra is individually checked before shipment, including the vibration unit, operating functions and mechanical guidance.

Development and manufacturing are closely connected to our own workshop and selected regional partners. Close cooperation with selected suppliers and short communication routes support traceable production and the ongoing development of the product.

Otto and Alex

From 2023 onward, Otto Hauck and Alexander Neagos were engaged in a professional exchange regarding a vibration tamper. Alexander Neagos is the holder of a patent covering a relevant technical approach and contacted Otto Hauck to explore potential market viability and launch prospects.

Otto Hauck subsequently took over the conceptual, technical and product-related development. Drawing on his long-standing experience in developing professional barista tools, the existing concept was further refined, technically engineered and brought to market readiness. Within one year, this resulted in a functional, market-ready product.

The market launch took place in 2024 in Copenhagen at World of Coffee. There, the Hauck Vibra Tamper was awarded the Best New Product Award by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). The Hauck Vibra subsequently attracted international attention within the specialty coffee and barista community.

Otto Hauck is the founder of Hauck Barista Tools and has been developing and distributing professional preparation tools for the international market for over ten years. The Hauck S-Tamper is based on a dynamometric design patented by Otto Hauck, as well as a portafilter support system that is also patented by him. This design has significantly influenced the handling of tamping and is now implemented in comparable form by a wide range of other manufacturers. It is frequently regarded within the industry as a technical reference point.
